Review: Creature of the Night

Title: Creature of the Night
Author:  Anne Stinnett
Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press
Release Date: March 13th, 2018

What promises to be the most sensational season yet of the controversial reality show Creature of the Night is about to premiere. The competition will be fierce and the challenges bloody because the twelve contestants are competing for more than a check and a bit of fame; they are competing for immortality.
To earn it, they will vie for survival before an audience that lurks like a pack of fiends, ready to repay any sign of weakness with jeering applause. At the same time, they must impress a panel of vampire judges, the most approachable of whom is a nightmare out of history. But the real predators are the producers.
While the audience looks forward to brutal good times, the contestants gear up to be their most outrageous, watchable selves. They have come to live, and to die. Their ranks include an intellectual desperate for more time, a vampire rights advocate on the verge of disillusionment, and a ballerina who thinks she has nothing to lose.
Under scrutiny from the bickering vampires and bloodthirsty audience, the competitors must navigate potentially lethal challenges and, if they ever hope to become undead, stay alive.

Thoughts...
Streaming now, in front of a live studio audience. 12 Contestants compete in a vampire competition run by vampires, to be turned into "Creatures of the Night"....This book is written like a reality tv show, including confessionals, talking with audience members, interviewing contestants, and of course commentary from the judges. I honestly felt like I was in the audience the entire time. The book has multiple pov's, which seems hard to follow but each character is completely different. The character development makes the book because they're contestants we get background information, and also find out why they're competing...which I must say made me like some characters more than others. I loved reading this book, and getting to know the audience, judges, and the host. Who gets upset because an audience member is immune to his vampire charm. HE gets so flustered, it hilarious watching him try to intimidate a teenager only for her to rebuff him! That's right she's just not that into you! But she's also only 16....I wish we got to know a little bit more about her. The contestants are all over the place ranging from the dad who wants to make his kids proud to the high strung actress who is looking for her big break...There is plenty of gore, so be ready for it. Honestly sometimes the gore was a bit much but it fit so perfectly in the book. The contestants went through possibly 6 challenges, and two people were eliminated each round? During one competition the contestants had to open a vein on a participant, and drink their blood...it was hard reading this chapter..it was so descriptive, and gross! The contestants were super obnoxious at this point, those who didn't make well you can guess... If you enjoy reality tv or just a ridiculous good book read this!! 4/5

Read an Excerpt:
Chapter 1

The raw, earthly smell of the first drops of rain signaled the onset of the monsoon of 1962. Ten year old Rohan watched it from his window and inhaled deeply. He felt like he wanted to draw in as much as possible of this place that he loved so dearly. The rain had washed clean the gardens and roads of Bangalore. A city of sheer beauty, it was like a large painting suspended in time, being restored to its original brilliance with one masterly stroke. Bangalore with flower-laden trees, small lakes and numerous gardens was wonderful to behold. All was quiet, calm and serene.

But even his love for Bangalore could not match his passion for playing outdoors. His face registered dismay when the drizzle turned into a downpour and sheets of rain hid the verdant trees and the glitter of the rocks beyond the playing fields. He would lose valuable time waiting for the rain to subside to play cricket with his friends.

Drizzly weather or what his dad called ‘English weather’ never hampered him like a monsoon onslaught did. It was as familiar to him as the streets and their English names – Lloyds Road, Cline Road, Hutchins Road and Davis Road. The English had definitely made Bangalore into a ‘Little
England’ and left behind a large community of Anglo Indians. A proud community of mixed cultures, they were concentrated in the northern part of the city called the ‘Cantt’ (short for Cantonment) along with a cosmopolitan mix of settlers from other states and countries.

The southern part, the original old Bangalore was known as the ‘City’ area. The Cantt area, extending from Richmond Town to Frazer Town, had spacious bungalows with servant’s quarters, private lawns and gardens. It was a township by itself, with lakes, gardens, theatres, restaurants, bars and exclusive clubs. The Cantt area was nothing without the Anglo-Indians whose exuberance and fun loving nature enhanced the charm of life in Bangalore. They lived for the day and never gave the morrow a thought. Romantic at heart, partying was their greatest pastime. A few couples, country liquor, lots to eat and they would dance till the stars drooped and went down under.

Rain, rain go away, come again another day,” Rohan whispered urgently, and was gratified to see the rain gradually stop. Now, he could go out to the beckoning playground and join his friends for a game of cricket, yet another legacy of the British.
“Ma, I am going to play”, he yelled.
“Come back on time, Rohan”, his mother warned. “Or you know how your father reacts!” Rohan ran out, looking back to wave to his mother at the door.

They were all there – Peter, Oscar, Roy, Philip, Akbar, Kiran, Akshay, Arun, Joe, Allan, Mahmud and Inder. The stumps were up, the teams chosen and the game was on. Cricket was an obsession with Rohan.
“Come on Rohan, we must win today”, urged Inder.
 “What high hopes”, teased Oscar.

Peter always red in the face, yelled, “Oscar, shut your bloody mouth and start batting.”

Thoughts...

This is by far the creepi-st book I have read in 2018...and it''s only April! I definitely had to watch cartoons, after reading a few pages! Then I decided to finish this book all in one weekend, and I was mind-blown. This is a dark, dark book like I was not expecting it at all. I honestly picked this book up because of the cover...I love how they used blue in the cover to convey dark and scary...

Louisa is just trying to make enough money for her next meal but conning individuals on teh street. She is strong and stubborn but rightfully so, I mean she left her boarding school because it wasn't for her. Louisa left to make a better future for herself...But then life happens, and she get bamboozled into going to Coldthistle House and becoming a maid..While working for Coldthistle House,  no one ever works at Coldthistle, you work for the house....Louisa soon learns that Coldthistle is evil, and full of evil people, but what does this have to do with Coldthistle? Well if you darken Coldthistle's door, or summoned to the house you're going to die, and not pretty either. The guests are judged on their past crimes, with their demise carried out by owner of the house Mr. Morningside, and unusual staff.

Louisa soon learns that everyone in the house has a role to play, and she is about to be the lading lady. Once Louisa learns how the house works, she sets out to find a way to save herself, and her new friend Lee Brimble  que the drama....

I truly enjoyed this book, Louisa whine a lot, and is does a lot of things that makes you wonder if she truly wants to leave..I can't wait for the sequel!!4/5

Top Ten Tuesday(55): Frequently Used Phrases In Young Adult Blurbs...

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Top Ten Frequently Used Phrases Used In Young Adult Blurbs...
(We decided to change the topic just a little this week...we did not like the previous version...also this is way more #spicy.)

Melissa's Top Five
  1. This is the story of THAT SUMMER... books with a phrase like this or similar phrases like "this was going to be a summer to remember" are honestly my jam.
  2. Heartbroken over the tragic death of..lover,mother,brother,dog Usually means books like this will start tragic as hell and end super uplifting and leaves you with all the feels.
  3. Apparently I live here now..This usually means the book will be about the main character reluctantly moving somewhere and the having a grand old time.
  4.  Nothing ever happens here..After uttering this phrase some person/event/magical being enters the story and shakes up the main characters forever.
  5. Crown Princess/Prince wants vengeance Someones whole family was murdered or close friend betrayed them in books with this phase. They are always bloody and filled with intrigue.
    Jessica's Top Five
    1. The two develop an unlikely bond....Currently laughing as I type this, bro I don't even know. Umm this is one of those #spicy books where the love is forbidden or the characters obliviously hate each other but realize they might love each other....
    2. Can the bad boy stay bad forever?..I have read plenty of books with this in the blurb, and I love it...Typically these are motorcycle club series books  or series about the brothers who have troubled lives, and love with conditions...
    3. Strange things have always happened...until now..Usually means fantasy or paranormal books with SECRET POWERS that no one knows about...(yes, I did whisper the last part.)
    4. Soon everything she thought she knew about herself and her life will be challenged...This is one of those my husband left me for the nanny/housekeeper, and I was a homemaker. Now she is contemplating life and trying to reinvent herself with....A MAN! but don't worry she now knows that she needs to be independent, and have her own life.
    5. If only she could love me for me...Yes, this is a reformed bad boy who values the love he no longer has....And will spend the rest of the book forcing his love onto said woman...until A.) she takes him or B.) makes him understand their time has is gone...option B rarely happens but it would be nice..
These are the books that  have we found with hilarious phrases in the Blurbs.

reviewed Burro Hill not to long ago and you can check out my review HERE!!!

    ********************************************************
    Author Interview
    1. To start off this interview I'm going to ask you the age old question, what inspired you to write Burro Hills?
It wasn't one thing in particular, but I had this vision of a lonely, rundown Southern California town, and this mosaic of voices of all these teens who lived there. It sort of evolved from there. The book began as a multi-POV, changed to dual-POV, and eventually became Jack's story. At the time I was starting the book, I was also re-reading Janet Fitch's WHITE OLEANDER quite a bit, so I was fascinated with the way she described the climate and culture of Southern California.

    2.  Diversity in books and the publishing industry is a huge topic so I'm curious  about your thoughts on it. Whose voices do we see? Whose voices do we need more of? How can authors address that?
Teens absolutely want and need to see themselves represented in books, and written in honest, authentic ways. We definitely need more #OwnVoices books of all kinds, and they need to be given more push and support from the publishing industry. And when authors do  write outside of their lanes, they should do their due diligence and research and get sensitivity readers and second opinions. It's sort of like if you were writing a period novel, you wouldn't want to get the historical facts wrong or misrepresent a major event. So you'd do your research and talk to historians and read a variety of different texts on the subject to ensure you were being as accurate and nuanced as possible. Teens and young adult readers in general can tell when something is written inauthentically.

3.If you could spend a day with any fictional character from either a movie or a book who would it be and Why?
I would definitely spend the day with Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks! He'd be hilarious and I'd love to pick his brain about dreams, the supernatural, and how it all relates to solving crimes. And we'd drink damn good coffee and eat cherry pie, of course.

    4. Best advice you have received as a writer or just in general?
Everyone is on their own journey in publishing, and there's no rush to the finish line. Focus on your own goals and path and worry less about what other writers are doing. It's a tough business, and envy and self-doubt can prevent you from moving forward.

5.What is your favorite childhood book?
Two trilogies, if you'd call them that: Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz (with the original illustrations by Stephen Gammell, of course).

    6. We have come to the end of the interview so my last question to you is, If you had to describe your book in 3 words what would it be?
I'll cheat and borrow from Rebecca Christiansen, who did a blurb for me, and say: dark, dangerous, and beautiful.

    Sexy Excerpt

She ran her hand through his hair, playing with his braid. “I like your braids. They’re very attractive.”
His eyes  opened, watching her. “They’re warrior braids.”
“They’re nice,” she said, and then his lips were on hers. She put her leg up over his, pressing
against him. “Take your trousers off.” She kissed his earlobe. Her hand sought his hardness. Axel
inhaled sharply. “I want to see what you have for me. It felt so big.” She pressed into him. Her
hand caressed his cock. “Can it get big again?”
“Yes, it can.” Axel rolled her on her back.
Her legs spread, and he lay between her thighs. The short gown rose to the top of her thighs, exposing her mound. His trousers were gone. Breanna stroked his back, then allowed her hands to travel over his firm buttocks. His powerful body felt wonderful. His thickening cock pressed against her thigh.
“You want me?” He kissed behind her ear. “Will you join with me in every way? Will you be my mate, the mate to a troll? Will you stay with me as mine forever?”
“Yes.” She kissed his shoulder. “Will you love me?” She gazed into his eyes. “Yes.” He nibbled at her neck. “I’ll love you, cherish you like no other.”
She rubbed her hands over his backside, enjoying the feel of his muscles. His large hands were all over her, caressing. His muscles tensed beneath her hands briefly before relaxing. He moved his hips against her. Then her gown was gone.
He cupped one of her breasts in his hands as he tenderly massaged it. “You have beautiful, full breasts.” He kissed the valley in between, up to the other breast’s nipple. “You taste marvelous.”
His lips found hers. They kissed passionately, making her feel lightheaded. Wrapping her legs around his, she gripped him tight and pressed against him. Dampness escaped her pussy, wetting the sheets beneath her.
“So wet for me,” he growled near her ear. “I like it.”
“Axel, I want you,” Breanna said breathlessly.
Axel kissed her again, making her see stars. He pressed the head of his cock into her. His fit was tight, uncomfortable at first. She clenched her legs and vaginal muscles, again hesitant to allow him. With loving patience, he stilled, kissing her neck and shoulders. He pressed more into her. Relaxing under his tender ministrations, she allowed him full entrance.
“Axel.” She whispered his name in breathless surrender as he deflowered her.
Holding her, he stilled. Rising up on his arms, he looked down at her. His eyes were warm, deeper blue, full of unspoken emotions. Leaning down, he kissed her lips sweetly.
“You feel so good.” His voice was full of emotion. He moved his hips forward then pulled back, repeating the motion in a rhythmic way.
“Oh, Axel.” Breanna squeezed her pussy muscles around his cock, milking it. His hardness filled her, his length throbbing within her. The pleasure was intensely breathtaking.
Axel moaned next to her ear. “Oh, sweetheart, I like it.”
Pushing harder, he increased his pace. The bed groaned under their passionate dance.
Breanna lifted up to meet him. Her hips worked in a rhythmic pattern. Wrapping her legs around his back, she arched her pussy for his access. Fully opened to him, she held onto him as he pushed in and out of her.
“Oh,” she moaned. “It feels wonderful, Axel.”
Her body shook, overcome with sensation. Tears rolled down her cheeks. He kissed them away. She shut her eyes to endure the overwhelming pleasure as it climaxed within her. The bliss, so powerful, like lightening, struck her core, filling her with its force, nearly causing her to pass out. Hanging on to consciousness, she yelled his name. She clung to him, her nails dug into his back as he held on. Axel moved powerfully against her, until his body tensed, then stilled.
The candles in the room flared brighter, and the fire roared loud, as if a beast was within the flames. The entire castle quaked, making the bed move. She was engulfed with the sensation of power pulsing through her, dazing her. The ring on her hand pulsed too. The pleasure ran up her arm, directly to her heart and down to her pussy, making her soak them both with wetness.
