Review: Legacy

Title: Legacy
Author: Ellery A.Kane

How do you want to feel today?

In 2041, the choice is yours.

San Francisco is deserted, the Bay Bridge bombed, and the BART subway trains grounded. The Guardians, members of an elite and mysterious government-appointed military police force, are maintaining order at all costs—thanks to emotion-altering drugs like Emovere that suppress fear and anxiety.

Lex Knightley, daughter of a prominent forensic psychiatrist, risks entering the devastated city to partner with the Resistance, a group of rebels intent upon exposing the dangers of Emovere.
Lex discovers an ally in Quin McAllister, a magnetic Guardian Force recruit with a haunting past that binds them together. As she uncovers the secrets of the Guardian Force and confronts the truth about her family, Lex begins to realize that even those closest to her are not quite who they seem.
Legacy is the first in a trilogy but can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

**********************

Legacy's synopsis will definitely draw you in if your a fan of down with the government dystopian books. The story starts of strong and just keeps going. This worked and didn't work for me I felt like everything was pretty fast paced and a bit more detail in general would have been great. The best part about the book is learning about the different emotion-altering drugs.

The book starts off with a bang with Lex and her dangerous trip across the bridge to find the rebels. In the beginning he pov switches from present to past explaining how Lex got there, and how her mother is the person who started the problem in the world that the rebels are facing. Lex was kind of hit or miss for me on one hand she was a likable character on the other she a bit stubborn somewhere towards the end of the book and she started to bother me. Quin was kind of hard to understand,he was hot then cold the next minute. I couldn't really relate to both characters. The other charterers like Max or Eddie where probably a lot more relate-able for me than the main two.

The cover fit wonderfully with the story and a few key moments in the book. Legacy is a good read/book and I can respect that but truthfully it's just not something I'd read again. Regardless to how I feel though give Legacy a shot and form you own opinion.2/5

Something to Note: I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Review:In A Handfull Of Dust

Title: In A Handful Of Dust
Author: Mindy McGinnis

The only thing bigger than the world is fear.

Lucy’s life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy’s childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy’s future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach.

When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what’s killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn’s mind, and the prospect of a “normal” life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust.

In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

***********************************

So normally I hate is when a sequel is announced after I’ve read the first book thinking it was a standalone, but Not a Drop to Drink was one of my favorite YA post-apocalyptic dystopian type books even with my reluctance to read it at first. So with all that being said I was more than excited to read In A Handful Of Dust and I'm glad it lived up to the awesomeness of the first book.

Lynn the main character of Not A Drop To Drink is no longer a teenager. She is now in the "mother" role of raising her own teen. Remember Lucy, the little girl she took in? Yep that is the girl we get to hear this story from. This book has a different feel to it than the first book. Both are gripping and gritty but In A Handful Of Dust has a hint of wanderlust in it even if the journey started not really by choice. Lucy's story is about survival in a dangerously beautiful world just as much as it's a weird coming of age story with her trying to literary find a place in the world. With Lucy becoming her own person not just how Lynn is or others around her. With new and old characters Lucy and Lynn's journey is defiantly worth the read.

Unlike reading some stories were the main characters are on a long journey and I lose interest, In A Handful Of Dust kept me glued to the page from start to finish. I really like the cover and how the mountains are in the background the color scheme also seems dusty and it ties in great with the first book cover .Once again Mindy McGinnis wrote about a tragically gorgeous world where survival is key and some times the right choice isn't the easiest choice to make.5/5

Steel Lily

Title:Steel Lily
Author:Megan Curd

AVERY PIKE is a commodity. No, more than a commodity. Her existence is guarded at all costs.

She’s a water Elementalist, the strongest of her dwindling kind. She creates steam to provide energy to fuel Dome Four: the only thing standing between humanity and an earth ravaged by World War III. No steam, no Dome. No Dome, no life. Or so she thinks.

That is, until a mysterious man offers her a way out of having to donate steam. A way to escape the corrupt government of Dome Four. While the offer seems too good to be true, Avery is intrigued. But when she arrives to her new home, she realizes the grass isn’t any less dead on this side of the fence. Instead, the lies are just hidden better.…Which means digging deeper.

When Avery enlists the help of her friends to uncover the truth, she learns that while some secrets are better left concealed, humankind was never meant to live in a cage. And when you can control the most sought after resource, you can learn to control anything…including the fate of your world.

******************
The dystopian genre is one of my favorite genres that I normally like to read but sometimes i feel like it's over done and lately the genre leaves me feeling meh about it in general So when I was sent an email asking if I'd check out Steel Lily I was wary but when I saw it was a steampunk/dystopian mix I was all for it cause Steampunk isn't a genre i normal check out but on occasion when i do I enjoy it.

Steel Lily is a dystopian young adult novel, set in the future. Avery Pike, a water elementalist is required to produce steam in dome three to support life inside the dome. We quickly learn that everyone knows what she's capable of and because of her ability, everyone wants a piece of it for themselves. The stories filled with pretty likable characters from Avery the main character who's  snarky and bit annoying but overall a feisty character that just trying to figure out the good guys from the bad guys. Then there's Avery’s best friend Alice she is just as adorable and a friend till the end Then there's Jaxon who's behavior gives me whip lash but overall he i loved his sarcastic and charismatic personality. The bad guys are just perfect, that's all i'm going to say about them..

There are so many awesome things going on in this book, from corrupted governments, seedy experiments, resistance movements, and so much more but to be honest Steel Lily was a bit of a let down. The synopsis had me intrigued then as I read the book so did the world Avery lives in, the various mysteries and plots but overall the book fell flat and kinda cramped and rushed, with no flow and no build up to, well, anything. It's not like I didn't enjoy the book it is just that I was expecting more,Ill probably check out the sequel to see what happens next though.Don't just take my word on Steel Lily though give it a read and form your own opinion. 2/5

Theme Of The Day:Our (fictional) Goverment Sucks...the Journey Home

I haven't done a theme of the day in a very long while so after reading Safekeeping and realizing it reminded me of another book that I always planned on reviewing but never did I decided to make this post. This posts theme of the day focuses on governments that are less than ideal and the main characters the Journey Home

Title: Far From The War
Author:Jeffrey David Payne
Publisher:Roche Harbor Books

Economic ruin and partisan rancor have pushed America to the brink of a new civil war. Esther is caught in the middle, serving as a page in the United States House of Representatives when rogue politicians and military leaders stage a modern day coup d'etat. When the coup turns violent, she abandons Washington, D.C. for home. She must learn to survive on her own as transportation and financial networks fail, as the war disrupts food and water supplies. The result is a cautionary tale about political extremism and the true cost of war

Cover:It took me a while to figure out that the silhouette on the cover was a girl..and now that I know I can't unsee it.I feel like the light colors and shadowy figure fits in with the uncertainy of Esther's journey thoughout the book.

My Thoughts:I received a copy from the publisher way back when the book was released and sadly it's taken me till now to write about this interesting book.At first it was not my cup of tea, I was confused by all the political talk and phases. However I continued on reading and grew to enjoy Esther's story, for story is much different Than Radley's in Safekeeping there's a lot more detail about why the government is fall but the main focus is still survival and Esther journey home-bound.If you're a fan of civil war tales and a brave young women then this book id for you.If your on the fence give it a try you never know.3/4

Title: safekeeping
Author:Karen Hesse
Publisher:Feiwel & Friends

Radley just wants to get home to her parents in Vermont. While she was volunteering abroad, the American People's Party took power; the new president was assassinated; and the government cracked down on citizens. Travel restrictions are worse than ever, and when her plane finally lands in New Hampshire, Radley’s parents aren’t there.

Exhausted; her phone dead; her credit cards worthless: Radley starts walking

Cover:Not mush to say about the cover other than the fact that the photography is lovely and fits with the story completely.
My Thoughts: Safekeeping I feel like will please a certain type of person one who revels is the everyday. The story revolves around Radley and her journey home as well as her journey to a new place that she can possibly call home.Safekeeping is more about the everyday urge to survive and keep on hoping than the fall of the government. Safekeeping is more about Radleys story than the fact that the government is in shambles. The book is filled with gorgeous pictures that more or less go with the story. While I enjoyed Safekeeping it might not be for everyone. You never know till you give it a try though.2/5

Not A Drop To Drink

Title: Not A Drop To Drink
Author: Mindy Mcginnis
Published: Sept 24,2013
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

****************************
When this book first came out I never really was all that excited it seemed like a good book  but it wasn't on the top of my to read list. However it seemed like for a certain point this book was everywhere on the internet.I refused to read the book or to look up  reviews about this book for no reason other than the fact I'm stubborn and refused to be swayed to read it,then one day after talking about it with a friend I figured what the hell and bought the book and guess what....I absolutely love Not A Drop To Drink

Survival isn't always fast paced fights to the death.Or battling demons and monsters.Sometimes it's  slow and steady but still equally as terrifying and gritty.Lynn the main character was raised cold by her mom learning that survival and living day to day protecting the pond is all that matters. However life is filled with twist and turns and Lynn gets tossed a curve ball by life hard. After that the reader get to see Lynn grow and learn that maybe there's more out in the world then just surviving.

What I enjoyed about this story that while it's not flashy like other dystopian novels,it's still a gripping story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It has a sense of realism that scary and made me grateful for tap water. The cover to me fits the book/story perfectly because the house against the bare background and hills makes highlight the bleak feeling of the story but the splash of color makes it seem almost hopeful in a weird way.
When I finished reading the book I put it down spazzed out/fangirled about it then reread it a few days later. The ending was honestly a bit bitter sweet and perfect,I'm glad I decied to give the book a chance.Don't just take my word on the awesomeness of Not A Drop To Drink though go check it out yourselves. 5/5

P.S There's a companion book coming out in Sept called In A Handful Of Dust.I'm not sure how I feel about this since I thought Not A Drop To Drink was going to be a stand alone but regardless I plan on reading to find out more about the world Mindy M created. (:

Under The Never Sky

Title:Under the never Sky
Author:Veronica Rossi
Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

 **********
Under The Never Sky has been on my TBR list since I first heard about it but i never sat down to read it until recently. Since a lot of the time I'll put a book on my list before it comes out then forget about for awhile...Under the Never Sky was one of those books. Recently though leading up to Jan 8 I saw a lot of blogs talking about the Under the Never Sky books because the sequel Though the Ever Night was coming out. Thanks to all the promo for the sequel i got reinterested in Under the Never Sky and decided to read it after months of forgetting it even existed.

So Under the never Sky is describe as a dsytopian(?)  novel  when honestly to me it comes off as some weird Sci-fye /dsytopian mutt.Under the Never Sky is set in the future where the world is ravaged by something called Aether. The aether storms  strike the earth with fire and cause choas. Humanity's forced to split into two different societies—the Dwellers and the Outsiders. Dwellers/Moles live in pods spending time in a vital world.Outsides/Savages live in the death shop which is desert like and harsh.
The story is told from dual perspectives, so we get a clear picture of both Perry and Aria's lives, their prejudices, their beliefs, their emotions and everything about them.Aria was a little too angst ridden at times but she was a plausible character.Same with Perry he was an interesting character but i felt that his desire to be blood lord was a bit much. All in all the characters were well written and  the secondary character were intriguing they made me want to know more about them in the short time they were around. The story wiil have you at the edge of your seat waiting to see how it ends.

I like the book I just wish i knew how the Aether got there and it would have helped if the language was explained in like a glossary at the end.My issues with the book are minor though so it more good then bad.The cover is absolutely gorges and definitely does justice to the story.Weather or not this book in dsytopian or science fiction doesn't really matter all i know is that i enjoyed reading Under The Never Sky and can't wait to get started on Though the Ever Night!!.4/5

Crewel

 Title: Crewel
Author:Gennifer Albin

Sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has always been special. When her parents discover her gift—the ability to weave the very fabric of reality—they train her to hide it. For good reason, they don’t want her to become a Spinster — one of the elite, beautiful, and deadly women who determine what people eat, where they live, how many children they have, and even when they die.

Thrust into the opulent Western Coventry, Adelice will be tried, tested and tempted as she navigates the deadly politics at play behind its walls.  Now caught in a web of lies and forbidden romance, she must unravel the sinister truth behind her own unspeakable power.  Her world is hanging by a thread, and Adelice, alone, can decide to save it — or destroy it

 *******

So people always say don't judge a book by the cover but I'm not going to lie with this book thats exactly what i did.I noticed the weird name then all the pretty colors and pounced-not literally-on the book. After staing at the cover like a crazy person  for a bit I checked out the book jacket and decided to read Crewel The concept was interesting, the time-weaving thing was pretty creative Crewel takes place in a  dystopian world that has a lot of time-weavers:Spinsters that are in charge of everyone's life but powerless in their own life and were women seem to be second class citizens.

The story takes place in Arras were Spinsters are prized for their beauty and talent at weaving. every thing is supposedly perfect and you have no choice then do as your expected.Adelice Lewys is  different then most girls she could be powerful, beautiful and a spinster but she doesn't want that life. After testing she has no choice and gets sent to the Coventry and that's where thing get interesting.Adelice's character is:strong, sassy, and a bit naive every now and then.Adelice is an intriguing character who has so many beliefs and morals that she follows despite the risks.

Once in the Coventry she meet a variety of people that she's unsure of who to trust,I enjoy how the characters are set up and how not everything is how it seems.Josten and Erik are two people Adelice meets and then  the love triangle begins. I am not against love triangles if they serve a purpose in the story and don't come off as cliche but this one fell flat for me.It felt forced and maybe unnecessary but even with that being said both boys are great characters that I can see the appeal in them.

By the end of Crewel you'll be asking your self "What. Did. I. Just. Read?"  I know that's exactly what i did.Crewel is imaginative, captivating.has a bit of a dark side and pepper with a hint of Sci fye.
Overall, I really liked Crewel after the surge of dystopian  novels that sprung out of know where Crewel stands out. I think dystopian fans- like myself -who are looking for something completely different, will eat this up and be pulled in by the cover as well as the story.4/5

Mordern Day Retellings & Untold stories

So a big thing I see a lot is the modern day  retelling of fairy tales, classic novels and then there's the story of a minor character that nobody really care about in the original. My favorite would be the stories of the minor character that nobody cares about its fun to see the point of view from someone who may not have been in the original story at all except for very briefly.

Theres also novels with new characters that weren't in the original but just seem to fit, these are also my fave its fun imaging what If and hoping for a new outcome even though you know whats going to happen..So because there are alot of these types of stories I'm going to make a quick list of a few.Hope you Enjoy!

Hamlet

Title:Falling for Hamlet
Author:

Meet Ophelia: a blonde, beautiful high-school senior and long-time girlfriend of Prince Hamlet of Denmark. Her life is dominated not only by her boyfriend's fame and his overbearing family, but also by the paparazzi who hound them wherever they go. As the devastatingly handsome Hamlet spirals into madness after the mysterious death of his father, the King, Ophelia rides out his crazy roller coaster life, and lives to tell about it. In live television interviews, of course.

Passion, romance, drama, humor, and tragedy intertwine in this compulsively readable debut novel, told by a strong-willed, modern-day Ophelia.

Ohh... Ophelia's story gets told.I was pleasantly surprised when i read this book.

Title:  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
Author: Tom Stoppard
Acclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm's-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare's play.

In Tom Stoppard's best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end.

I recently stumbled upon this book after it was assigned for class and I'm glad.I have yet to read this book and hopefully its enjoyable.I like the fact that these to characters get to tell their brief story.

Macbeth

Title: Lady Macbeth's Daughter
Author: Lisa Klein
The daughter Macbeth might have had, if Shakespeare had thought to create her…

Albia has grown up with no knowledge of her mother of her father, the powerful Macbeth. Instead she knows the dark lure of the Wychelm Wood and the moors, where she’s been raised by three strange sisters. It’s only when the ambitious Macbeth seeks out the sisters to foretell his fate that Albia’s life becomes tangled with the man who leaves nothing but bloodshed in his wake. She even falls in love with Fleance, Macbeth’s rival for the throne.

Yet when Albia learns that she has the second sight, she must decide whether to ignore the terrible future she foresees—or to change it. Will she be able to save the man she loves from her murderous father?  And can she forgive her parents their wrongs, or must she destroy them to save Scotland from tyranny?

In her highly anticipated follow-up to Ophelia, Lisa Klein delivers a powerful reimagining of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, featuring a young woman so seamlessly drawn it seems impossible she was not part of the Bard’s original play....

Cinderella

Title: Cinder

We all know the Disney Cinderella with the sweet old fairy God mother but here's a kick A** cyborg who's a revamped version of what we know.I'm definitely curious about this book and how it turns out

Title: Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister

Veronica Roth Divergent (♥Chicago!!!)

Title: Divergent

Author: Veronica Roth

Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books Published:May 3,2011

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Gaaa!! I'm in love with dystopian story's so when i found out about this book i was all excited plus it takes place in my home town.(Woot Woo Chi-town) I think the cover is extremely lovely i just adore the skyline in the background plus the flaming symbol.

The main character is Beatrice Prior  AKA Tris she is a member of a society that has been maintaining its peaceful existence by separating its citizens into 5 distinct factions. These factions are formed on the basis of virtues they cultivate in their members - Candor values honesty the most, Abnegation - selflessness, Dauntless - bravery, Amity - peacefulness and Erudite - intelligence She has to chose between all five and I'm not going to lie i would chose between Candor or Amity.

At 16 all citizens take a test that is supposed to help them decide if they want to stay with the faction into which they were born or transfer to another faction forever.Right before the choosing ceremony they take a test to help them decide Beatrice's test comes up inconclusive he has no idea what this means and she cant talk about it with any on  so now shes even more confused.
She ends up picking dauntless in stead of abnegation and has to leave everything shes once known behind.Though out the book she goes though her intuition to become dauntless. She picks up some friends along the way plus a enemy or two and a confusing love interest.
I would definitely suggest this book to any one who's interested in an a wonderful dystopian book that contains loads of action, slow romance,Kick-Ass heroine and a super flawed society. All in all i would give the book an 8/10 or a 4/5
