Three sisters. One spell. Countless dead.
Lula Mortiz feels like an outsider. Her sister’s newfound Encantrix powers have wounded her in ways that Lula’s bruja healing powers can’t fix, and she longs for the comfort her family once brought her. Thank the Deos for Maks, her sweet, steady boyfriend who sees the beauty within her and brings light to her life.
Then a bus crash turns Lula’s world upside down. Her classmates are all dead, including Maks. But Lula was born to heal, to fix. She can bring Maks back, even if it means seeking help from her sisters and defying Death herself. But magic that defies the laws of the Deos is dangerous. Unpredictable. And when the dust settles, Maks isn’t the only one who’s been brought back…

Don't forget to check out Labyrinth Lost the first book in the Brooklyn Brujas Series:
My thoughts...
Melissa and I have talked about this book for months, we both were able to get arcs. I was so sad when Melissa received a digital copy but then I was sent a hardcopy!! I'm pretty sure I danced in a circle for about 10 minutes, and called my mom. That darn cover is so awesome! Yes I mean both covers but seriously look at the covers....
Bruja Born picks up right after the events in Labyrinth Lost, and it's from Lula's pov. Yes this is a sequel but more of a companion. Lula Mortiz is the oldest sister of the Mortiz sisters, and she has completely messed up! Like really really really bad...After the tragic events of Labyrinth Lost, Lula is fearful, and nervous about everything including her relationship with her boyfriend Maks. He can never know that every morning Lula has her sister Alex, magically fix her face to cover the scars she received during Labyrinth Lost. But Alex cannot fix Lula's scars on the inside because as we all know beauty is only skin deep....A tragic accident happens, where everyone is dies except Lula and Maks, who is on life support. This leaves Lula with only one thing to do...Bring his *** back to life! When has this ever been a good idea? Interview with a Vampire, you know when Kristen Dunst was a child vampire...sooo creepy! Not that there are vampires in Bruja Born but that would be an excellent addition to the series. Just kidding we totally have a VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN...Get it the movie with Eddie Murphy.."I've come to make you my Queen.." Angela Basset was a detective in the movie...Anywho back to the review!
Lula is completely different from Alex, who wanted to give up her magic. Where Lula uses it every single day, and has no problem using it to bring her boy back. Before you ask yes, I love destruction, death and heartbreak but not when it comes in the form of Lula Mortiz. Lula was a hard character to like honestly, but I haven't liked her since the first book. She is very vain and full of herself until she can no longer count on those characteristics to define herself. Now we meet mad at world Lula who thinks Alex doesn't deserves her powers, and believes that Alex screwed everyone over. Lula has to deal with the consequences of her actions by giving up what she believes is her lohl (love of her life) teenage love I tell ya....This was bound to be a diaster...
I think the theme of Bruja Born, is letting go, Alex has to let go of her guilt about the events that transpired in Labyrinth Lost. Nova has to let go of his love for Alex, and Rose has to let go of the secrets that she was keeping from the family. Lula has to let go of Maks, and hopefully she will forgive Alex for what has transpired before. Now we need to hold Lula responsible for her actions, meaning what she done is just as bad as what Alex did but worse. Why worse you say?? Many people have died thanks to what Lula did, to bring Maks back to life...When will the Mortiz sisters learn....Please understand that everything I have said is subjective but ehh read Bruja Born and tell me what you think! Rating: 4/5
*I received an advanced copy of this book from Sourcebooks Fire in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion.*
