Review: How To Be Brave

Title: How To Be Brave
Author:E. Katherine Kottara
Publisher: St. Martins Press

An emotional contemporary YA novel about love, loss, and having the courage to chase the life you truly want.

Reeling from her mother's death, Georgia has a choice: become lost in her own pain, or enjoy life right now, while she still can. She decides to start really living for the first time and makes a list of fifteen ways to be brave - all the things she's wanted to do but never had the courage to try. As she begins doing the things she's always been afraid to do - including pursuing her secret crush, she discovers that life doesn't always go according to plan. Sometimes friendships fall apart and love breaks your heart. But once in a while, the right person shows up just when you need them most - and you learn that you're stronger and braver than you ever imagined.

How to be brave is a wonderful contemporary novel that I read from start to finish. It started off with a subtle bang; it started off with a poem that is beautifully written. Besides the story and characters in said story, the peppering of poems throughout the novel was my favorite thing about reading How To Be Brave.

E. Katherine Kottara has written an intriguing book that makes you think about how to be brave in your own life. Georgia is a very relatable main character who sounds like the type of friend you’d want if she wasn’t fictional. The secondary characters are also pretty relatable and make you wonder. While there were some cliche characters that you’d find in almost all YA contemporary novel like the mean girls, the loyal best friend, the love interested E. Katherine Kottara gave these old clichés some new life. My favorite secondary character is Evelyn. If How to Be Brave ever got a companion book I’d love for it to be about Evelyn and her story after How To Be Brave.

How To Be Brave  was beautiful, heartbreaking, sweet, funny, and ultimately hopeful.Based on the synopsis and cover I expected a light read and yes it was that but it was also thought provoking and has heart. I'd definitely recommend people to read How To Be Brave. 5/5
